The Division Patient Identity Specialist will have responsibility for coordinating the duties necessary to maintain the integrity of the Enterprise Master Person Index (eMPI) data for their Division in accordance with established policies and procedures. This position will partner with CommonSpirit Health colleagues to research, analyze and resolve complicated and time-sensitive patient identity and associated information structures across multiple corporate data management systems and among diverse hospital and corporate departments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Daily review of Overlays, Duplicates, Linkages and Review Identifier tasks, utilizing eMPI software in assigned market source systems;
    • Research and perform the associated eMPI maintenance required according to established eMPI procedures and guidelines through the examination of patient documentation necessary to validate patient identity;
    • Resolve any linkage related tasks across facilities within eMPI database tool according to established procedures and guidelines when identified as part of the Overlay, Duplicate, Linkage or Review Identifier processes;
    • Network as needed with outside resources, such as insurance websites, market physician office staff, etc. to determine accuracy of patient demographic data;
    • Notify all downstream systems/departments and supplemental software support staff of medical record number (MRN) changes as the result of a merge in a timely manner according to established procedures and guidelines
    • Work with Admitting and other departments to control the creation of duplicate medical record numbers through utilization of prevention software, as well as providing feedback and ongoing training
  • Coordinate the MPI process to ensure maximum efficiency of workflow and ensure timely and accurate management of the MPI in a cost-effective manner
    • Investigate and rectify complicated potential instances of medical record overlays
    • Investigate reports of mis-identity or identity theft in close collaboration with Privacy Officials and Facility Privacy Liaisons
    • Train resources for any hospital or regional department in need of training and in-service of staff on the MPI and how it impacts and integrates with other IT systems
    • Establish and maintain effective communication with other hospital and regional departments, acting as liaison for the MPI functions
  • Work in tandem with team members by participating in a 24/7 on-call support coverage rotation to manage overlays/merges necessary for seamless patient care and reduce patient safety risks
  • Disseminate patient medical record and provider merge information to colleagues as appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in a professional manner

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma is required.
  • Associate degree in Business Administration, Information Technology, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field or equivalent combination of education and/or experience required.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a healthcare-related industry setting.
  • Two (2) years of experience in information management services or Master Patient Indices desired. A bachelor’s degree in a healthcare related field may be used in lieu of experience.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for routinely, efficiently and successfully solving exceedingly complicated information structures across multiple technology platforms and in a highly regulated business environment required.
  • Strong background and knowledge in medical terminology required.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) required.
  • Experience using Allscripts, Cerner, GE Centricity, Epic, IBM Initiate, and Snagit.
  • Work experience within a hospital setting - clinical or non-clinical role.
